Mention Reminder
Comparison

Slack Workflow Builder, Zapier and Power Automate vs Mention Reminder

Workflow Builder, Zapier and Power Automate let you build your own chat alerts. An alert is only the first step: maintaining a list, recognising replies and scheduling reminders for each person require additional logic and maintenance.

⚖️ The short answer

Build an automation for a simple alert or to connect chat with another system. Use Mention Reminder for a ready-made list that reminds selected people and clears items after their replies.

What it is

What these automation tools can do with mentions

Slack Workflow Builder is included in paid Slack plans. A workflow can start when a message containing keywords you choose is posted, when an emoji reaction is used in a channel, on a schedule and in a few other ways, and then send messages or call connectors. There is no trigger for a specific person being mentioned.

Zapier connects Slack, Teams and Discord with other apps. Its Discord integration includes a New Mention trigger and a Send Direct Message action. Available events and capabilities depend on the integration and account. The free plan includes 100 tasks a month; paid plans offer higher limits and more advanced automations.

Power Automate’s Teams trigger When I’m @mentioned applies to the connected user and a selected chat or channel. Reading replies, maintaining a list and clearing reminders require extra logic. These can be built, but are not ready-made features of a simple mention alert.

The options
  • Slack Workflow Builder

Slack's built-in no-code automation, triggered by events inside Slack.

Best for: Simple Slack-only routines such as request forms, welcome messages and keyword alerts.

  • Zapier

A general automation service that connects chat apps with thousands of others.

Best for: Glue between chat and other systems, such as sending a mention into a CRM or spreadsheet.

  • Microsoft Power Automate

Microsoft's automation service, with Teams triggers and actions built in.

Best for: Microsoft 365 processes such as approvals, and personal Teams alerts you build yourself.

Reminders created automatically from @mentions
YesNo need to save messages. Applies to people an admin enables; obvious thanks and similar non-actionable mentions are skipped.
PartlyA message trigger matches keywords you set. Catching mentions of each person has to be built around that.
PartlyMention triggers exist (Discord's is New Mention), each one set up in a Zap. Free plan checks every 15 minutes.
PartlyWhen I’m @mentioned applies to the connected account and a selected chat or channel.
Recognises a reply to the mention
YesYour thread reply or reaction clears it. On Team, AI can also match your reply posted separately in the channel.
NoNot built in. You would design that logic yourself.
NoNot built in. Reply detection is a multi-step Zap you design.
NoNot built in. You would have to read the thread back and decide yourself.
Clears the reminder after a reply or reaction
YesThe item leaves your list after your reply or reaction. Deleting the source message also clears the reminder.
NoNothing to clear unless you build it.
NoNothing to clear unless you build a store and the steps that update it.
NoNothing to clear unless you build it.
Reminds the person who was mentioned
YesThe person mentioned in the message.
PartlyIt can message whoever you configure, if you set it up that way.
PartlyIt can DM the mentioned person, if the Zap is built for that person.
PartlyThe trigger applies to the connected account. Covering other people requires additional configuration.
Private, nothing extra posted in the channel
YesThe list and reminders are private. The bot adds a 🔔 reaction to the source message.
PartlyA workflow can send a DM instead of posting in the channel.
PartlyA DM step keeps it out of the channel.
PartlyA flow can post to you privately instead of the channel.
Personal reminder hours and timezone
YesOne daily reminder time on Starter; several chosen hours on Team. Weekdays only is optional.
PartlyScheduled workflows run at a time and cadence you set, per workflow rather than per person.
PartlySchedule and delay steps exist. Per-person hours and timezones are yours to build.
PartlyRecurrence and delay actions exist. Reminder hours per person are up to you.
AI checks whether a group mention needs a reply
YesOn Team, when an admin enables AI and group mentions. Off by default.
NoNot built in.
PartlyPossible with an AI step you configure and validate. Costs depend on the step and service.
PartlyPossible with an AI action you design and pay for.
Supports Slack, Teams and Discord
YesTeam can link several servers, workspaces and teams. An admin links the same person’s accounts across platforms.
NoSlack only.
PartlyConnects all three platforms, but any shared inbox is one you build.
NoBuilt around Microsoft 365. Teams is the natural fit.
Team setup without each person configuring reminders
YesAn admin installs the bot and chooses people. Everyone uses their existing chat account.
NoSomeone builds and maintains each workflow.
NoEach Zap is built and maintained by someone, usually per person or per channel.

When it is enough

When building it yourself is enough

  • You want an alert for one busy channel or one keyword, not reminders for the whole team.
  • Someone on the team enjoys building flows and will keep them running.
  • What you need to be reminded about is not a mention at all, such as a form submission or a new ticket.
When to add Mention Reminder

When to add Mention Reminder

  • You want each reminder to close itself on a reply, a reaction or a deleted message, without building that logic.
  • You want every covered person reminded at their own hours, in their own timezone, from one install.
  • You would rather not pay per task or run every time somebody is mentioned.
  • Your team spans Slack, Teams and Discord and you want one inbox per person, not three sets of flows.
🤝 Using both

Using both

Keep your automations for what they are good at: routing requests, posting summaries, connecting chat to other systems. Let Mention Reminder handle the @mentions themselves, so nobody has to maintain a flow that watches for them. The two do not interfere: the only thing Mention Reminder adds to a message is a 🔔 reaction, and if a workflow of yours reacts to emoji, leave the bell out of its trigger.

The alert is the easy part. What takes work is knowing that the mention was answered in the thread, reacted to or deleted, keeping a list of what is still open per person, and sending it at hours each person picked, in their timezone. Mention Reminder does all of that and clears each item on its own.

The When I’m @mentioned trigger applies to the account used in the connection, so it does not cover every colleague by itself. A wider solution needs additional design. In Mention Reminder, the admin chooses people in the panel and the bot maintains their reminders.

Stop letting things vanish in the scroll

Add Mention Reminder to Slack, Teams or Discord - two minutes, once. After that it runs in the background and nobody on the team has to do anything else. Starter is free, no card.
